    About this item

This is an antique Savonarola armchair. An English, walnut seat with overt Gothic revival overtones by James Shoolbred, dating to the Victorian period, circa 1880.

So named for the 15th century Italian Dominican priest Girolamo Savonarola, the progenitor for this style of chair was found in the convent of the San Marco in Florence.

Captivatingly carved chair, strikingly crafted in Italian gothic taste

Displays a desirable aged patina and in very good order

Select walnut stocks show fine grain interest and rich caramel hues

Enthusiastic carvings adorn every surface to exemplary effect

Prominent back rest decorated with green man masque above a foliate frieze

Acorn finials to each side rail stand above jovial lion head figures

Sinuous arms with chased leaf pattern terminate in oak leaf knuckles

Dashing demi-lune seat squab draws the eye, inset from the widely splayed arms

Large green man masque uniting the seat to the equally distinctive base

Standing upon unusual curved legs with bold leaf and scroll motif

United across the knee and ankle with decorated stretcher rails

Maker's mark to base for Jas. Shoolbred of London, with engraved number V233

This is an enticing and rare antique Savonarola armchair, graced with a level of craftsmanship and expression that attracts the most discerning of collectors. Solid joints and construction, delivered waxed, polished and ready for the home.
