About this item

Introduction to Claypits Pottery, Ewenny

Claypits Pottery is one of several traditional workshops based in Ewenny, a village in South Wales with a long history of pottery production. Using locally sourced red earthenware clay, potters in the area developed a distinct style rooted in practical forms and slip-decorated finishes. Claypits continues this regional legacy, maintaining hand-thrown methods shaped by generations of Welsh craft.

Description of the Mug

This hand-thrown beer mug was made by Claypits Pottery in Ewenny during the late 20th century. The body is coated in a deep cobalt blue glaze with small speckles and subtle tonal shifts across the surface. Decorative cream slip-trailing runs around the form in straight and wavy lines, with the Welsh word “Cwrw” (beer) hand-inscribed across the centre in a loose cursive style.

The form is practical and solid, with a generous handle and a wide opening suited for serving beer. The footring is deep and well-cut, and the base is clearly impressed with the workshop mark “CLAYPITS EWENNY.” The surface shows typical signs of handmade production, including minor irregularities and glaze variation that reflect its individual character.

Condition

In good condition overall with no chips or cracks noted. Minor surface irregularities and glaze variation are present, consistent with hand-thrown pottery.

Why You Should Buy

It’s a Welsh-made beer mug that says “beer” in Welsh - plain, useful, and made where it matters.
