About this item

Introduction to Welsh Miner’s Lamps

Safety lamps were a vital part of underground life in the coalfields of Wales, designed to reduce the risk of gas explosions. In the 20th century, Aberdare-based firm E. Thomas & Williams became one of the best-known makers, supplying working collieries across South Wales. Their Cambrian Type 1 design became an industry standard and remains a powerful symbol of mining heritage.

Description of the Lamp

This example is constructed from brass and iron with a domed top, loop handle and upright safety cage protecting a thick glass cylinder. The brass maker’s plaque is mounted clearly to the upper section, reading “E. Thomas & Williams Ltd Makers Aberdare.”

The lamp is engraved “Cambrian Type No. 1” and “No. 432,” with further stampings “E.T.&W” and “No. 1” to the lower section. The date “1950” is clearly inscribed to the side. The fuel reservoir, glass chamber and burner remain present inside.

Condition

Heavily oxidised surface with signs of historical use. Glass intact but clouded with residue. Structurally sound.

Why You Should Buy

It is a genuine working lamp from the South Wales coalfields, with every mark earned in use.
