Nepalese Nepalease Statue Buddhism Meditation Pose Carving Nepal

A striking antique Nepalese gilt Buddha sculpture from the Himalayan region, depicted seated in the traditional lotus position with a serene and meditative expression
The figure displays refined features with gently closed almond-shaped eyes, elongated earlobes and a peaceful smile, reflecting the spiritual calm characteristic of Himalayan Buddhist sculpture
The Buddha is shown in the Bhumisparsha mudra (earth-touching gesture), with the right hand extended toward the ground, symbolising the moment of enlightenment when the Buddha called the earth to witness his triumph over temptation
The figure wears an elaborately decorated robe draped across one shoulder, richly ornamented with intricate scrolling patterns and borders highlighted with small coloured glass or stone inlays, a decorative feature commonly seen in Nepalese and Himalayan devotional art
The hair is rendered in tight stylised curls rising to a domed ushnisha, while a decorative band across the head is further embellished with coloured inlays
The flowing robe spreads across the base, which is finely decorated with dense scrolling and foliate motifs typical of Nepalese craftsmanship
The sculpture retains traces of its original gilt lacquer surface, now displaying attractive areas of wear and patination that reveal darker lacquer beneath, adding depth, character and authenticity to the piece
Both decorative and spiritual, this impressive antique Nepalese Buddha would make a dramatic focal point in an interior, suitable for display in a living space, hallway, or contemplative setting
