    About this item

    Tinplate clock garniture
Comprising a domed topped clock and a pair of tall offset litho printed tins, printed with wood effect and floral detail, each with age related marks to the tin, the mechanical clock mechanism is currently untested.
    British, circa 1920

    The clock 32cm H, 20cm W, 14cm D. Each garniture 25cm H, 16cm W, 10cm D.

From the 1860’s to the 1930’s biscuit companies came up with a wide range of tin designs to promote the sale of their biscuits, the designs for these tins included Chinese vases, motor boats, the tomb of Tutan-hamun and many other designs which record the development of the British middle classes in this pre-war era.

This unusual clock garniture would have looked very at home on the family mantelpiece, with the use of new printing technology ‘offset litho printing’ these could be produced to resemble the original very closely, so much so that you need to tap the tin to hear the sound it resonates to know.
