About this item

Original vintage London Life magazine dated 8th April 1939, an authentic pre-war British society and picture weekly featuring period advertisements, theatre and fashion interest, and evocative late 1930s London social history.

A wonderful piece of British pre-war ephemera, capturing the glamour and atmosphere of London just prior to the outbreak of the Second World War.

Historically, publications of this type are recognised as part of the visual culture that later influenced John Willie, whose post-war Bizarre magazine drew inspiration from earlier British glamour and society periodicals.

An original London Life magazine dated 1st April 1939, an increasingly scarce pre-war issue combining elegant theatre imagery with notable contemporary film features from the golden age of cinema.

The front cover features ballerina Christine Spencer standing in the wings, watching prima ballerina Betty Bucknell performing in Magyar Melody at His Majesty’s Theatre, making this an especially decorative and highly displayable example for collectors of theatre and ballet ephemera.

The inside front cover features a photograph of Gunga Din taken by Sam Jaffe. Further images from the film include Cary Grant, Victor McLaglen and Joan Fontaine, all of whom starred in this classic 1939 adventure picture.

Further period film and theatre features include photographs of Gene Parker and Margaret Lindsay, together with scenes from Broadway Musketeers featuring Ann Sheridan and John Litel for First National Pictures.

Additional photographic features include Betty Compson, Constance Bennett and Roland Young, as well as central pages featuring Dorothy Arnold, Janet Waldo and Frances Robinson. Further photographs include Bonita Granville, Marie Wilson, Jane Bryan and Sheila Bromley from Girls on Probation.

A superb original issue offering a wonderful snapshot of London theatre and 1939 cinema culture.

CONDITION REPORT

Good original vintage condition overall for its age, with expected signs of wear entirely consistent with a pre-war periodical. There is some colour loss to the cover, rusty staples, general age-related discolouration and wear to the spine. Internally, the pages remain in good condition and present well. These honest signs of age do not materially detract from the magazine’s display quality or collectible appeal.
