About this item
This amazing cushion is made from a vintage Miao festival cape. I have removed the collar and sewn the shoulder halves together to make the cushion front. The textile is made up of densely appliqued yellow and green cotton, with patches of hand embroidery in tiny stitches. The work is quite extraordinary and would have taken its creator well over 6 months to do. The design is said to represent the city the Miao ancestors originated from over 5,000 years ago.
I have backed the cushion with a vintage hemp textile from the skirt that would have been worn as part of the same festival costume as the cape. The hemp is decorated in indigo batik, with a pattern similar to the applique on the cape shoulders. There is a zip fastener and feather pad.
This is an extra ordinary cushion, not only for the exquisite needlework, but also for the story behind the textiles.
