About this item
A wonderful oil on canvas painting by Artist Vernon Southward, born 1911 died 1981.
Vernon was born in France where he was educated, he moved sometime in the 1930's, he moved to the UK to Southampton, then he moved to Osterley in Middlesex in 1942 and worked for BOAC. In his 40's he studied art at the Heatherley school of Art in London, where he had Scotttish artist Iain McNab as a teacher.
From that time he began to exhibit his works, he was obviously influenced by the impressionist artists such as Monet, and Cezanne.
Once Vernon retired in 1976 he moved to Midhurst in West Sussex, which is where this beautiful painting is painted, the colours of the bordered of the gardens with trees is magical with the green house showing through, this painting is signed bottom left Southward 77, it is in its original frame (the measurements include the frame) it has Little Court Midhurst written on the edge of the canvas on the reverse side.
Vernon went on to exhibit at Paris Salon, where he became an Associated Member of Society of French Artists
