    About this item

This oval plaque was painted by William Yale who was born in 1843 and was employed at the Copeland Spode factory from 1869 until around 1895. It is thought that he left Copelands in around 1895 and set up a studio  in Stoke-on-Trent where he decorated blanks puchased from Copeland and other factories. This plaque is decorated with a scene of Glengarry Castle, which is also known as Invergarry Castle, the seat of Clan MacDonell of Glengarry. It is situated on Loch Oich, and was partially blown up by government forces after the defeat of the Jacobite army at the Battle of Culloden in 1746. Bonnie Prince Charlie was thought to have rested in the castle after the defeat and before his flight to France. Yale has written the name of the scene on the back, but there are no signs of the plaque's makers. It measures 360 mm (14 1/8th inches) in width, 280 mm (11 inches) in height, and has four mounting holes to the edge, with one of them being filled with enamel. It is in very good condition and probably dates from his time after leaving Copelands.
