Frank Egginton was a British contemporary landscape artist, synonymous with watercolours of the Irish countryside, particularly county Donegal. He came from an artistic family, with his father being the well-known artist Wycliffe Egginton (1875-1951), and his nephew was the artist Robert Egginton. His daughter and son in law have run The Gallery in Dunfanaghy, Co. Donegal for many years.

Frank (officially Francis John) Egginton was born in Wallasey in the county of Cheshire on 10 November 1908. When he was a baby the family moved to Newton Abbott in Devon, as his father had been appointed headmaster of the College of Art there.

Frank was educated at Newton College, and then Newton Abbott College of Art, and Exeter School of Art. He then spent some time perfecting his drawing whilst working in an architect’s office. In 1921 the family moved again to Teignmouth in Devon.

In 1930 Egginton visited Co. Donegal and painted some pictures for a businessman friend of his father’s. He developed a love of the west Irish countryside and started staying there regularly, staying longer and longer until he made his home there.

He began to exhibit at the Royal Scottish Academy from 1932 onwards, and contributed 15 works between 1932 and 1938, most of which had Donegal connections. He became a keen ornithologist and went on trips to Iceland and Switzerland to watch and paint birds.

In 1938 Egginton visited the USA and spent several months travelling and painting the landscape and American Indians in their villages.

During the Second World War he worked in a Mackie’s Foundry in Belfast, which was converted to produce military aircraft. In 1946 he moved with his wife to Cookstown, Co. Tyrone.

In 1952 Victor Waddington Galleries, Dublin held a joint exhibition for Howard Knee and Frank Egginton, and Egginton’s contribution in particular was received with significant critical acclaim. Although water colours were always his first choice, after the age of about 50 Egginton began to paint with oils in the winter months.

As well as exhibiting with the Royal Scottish Academy Egginton became a regular exhibitor with the Fine Art Society in London, where he showed well over 100 works. He also sent paintings for exhibition to the Royal Cambrian Academy at Conwy, where he was a member, the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, London, and the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. In Belfast, his work was seen occasionally at Rodman’s Art Gallery, Belfast, and today two of his works are in the Queen’s University collection.

Frank Egginton died on 7 April 1990.

This original watercolour painting by Frank Egginton shows a scene from Recess in Connemara, on the west of Ireland. The view is looking down a path across the peat bogs, which are scattered with large boulders. If we look closely we can see two horses and figures working in the peat bogs. The view extends on to the magnificent Maamturk Mountains. The Maamturks is a long, almost straight range of mountains, with weathered quartzite peaks in its central section. This image depicts a low mist hanging over the mountains, so that they are silhouetted against the heavy sky. The palette is warm tones, and the overall image perfectly captures the atmosphere of this beautiful region.
