About this item
A good quality, Victorian copper mould with the Brunswick Star design to the top. The Brunswick Star emblem is used in the U.K. to surround the royal cypher on various badges, such as those on the caps of the police and fire services in England and Wales. Brunswick refers to the German Duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg, better known as the House of Hanover whose heads became the kings of Great Britain. This mould is marked with the orb and cross symbol used by Benhams above a workman’s mark in the shape of a radiating sun. To the opposite side it is stamped “REGISTERED SEPTEMBER 15.1*” but the remainder of the date is missing. I believe that this design was actually registered in 1865. The mould is made from a heavy gauge of copper and it dates from c.1870. The design was made in a couple of sizes and this is one of the larger examples. It is in very good condition, with just tiny dents to two of the high points on the top. The tinning, to the interior, is still in very good, bright, usable condition.
