    About this item

Six Chippendale Period Walnut Dining Chairs
A set of 6 chairs comprising 4 single chairs and two carvers.  With pierced splat, carved with interlaced and touches of foliage in a basic Director style.  The top rail curves downwards at the ends into the moulded shaped uprights over upholstered drop in seats.  The square moulded front legs with carved corner brackets, supported by H-stretchers.
    English, circa 1760

A well executed set of dining chairs of substantial scale dating from the Chippendale Period of furniture design and cabinet-making, the walnut with good overall colour and well carved detail.   The pierced splat of one chair has had old repairs and is reinforced to the back with metal plates.  You will note that one of the carved blocks supporting the front legs has a small ear missing, from the colour of the timber this has been missing for some time so the have left this as part of the character of the history fo the chair and the diners who have sat upon them.  The drop in seats have recently been recovered in yellow silk.  The chairs are presented in good overall condition and are ready to use.

Chippendale is arguably the most famous furniture designer in history, he published his pattern book 'The Gentleman and Cabinet-Makers's Director' in 1753.  His designs were then used by many other cabinet-makers emulating the style of the great Thomas Chippendale and these designs have been used ever since.  This set of Chairs date from the time of Chippendale but they are not from his workshop.

    96cm H, 57cm W, 53cm D. Seat 47cm H. (All 6 chairs are the same dimensions).
