About this item
Sizeable oil on canvas by William Hyams, 1878-1954, of a coastal steamship. Circa 1935.
These were the workhorses of British merchant fleet from the late 19th century but by the 1960s they had all disappeared. They were immortalised in poet laureate John Masefield's poem Cargoes.
William Hyams trained as an artist at Brighton school of art but later spent time at sea. His work has been shown at the RA and RI amongst others.
