Available for sale from Big Sky Fine Art in the English county of Dorset, these academic life drawings of male nudes are by the German artist Eduard Braun and date from 1826.
There are drawings on either side of the paper.
The drawings are presented and supplied in an interesting configuration with a modern twist (which is shown in these photographs). The paper has been mounted between two sheets of Tru Vue Museum Glass® UV99 so that the wall or setting behind the hanging is visible and therefore provides the surround for the artwork. This also allows both drawings on either side of the paper to be viewed or displayed.
These antique drawings are in very good condition, commensurate with their age. They want for nothing and the presentation as a whole is supplied ready to hang and display.
One of the drawings is annotated “Gezeichnet von Eduard Braun 1826” (Drawn by Eduard Braun 1826).
The drawings come from a portfolio by Eduard Braun.

These stunning original pencil and charcoal drawings on paper are by a German artist called Eduard Braun. He was born in 1798 and died in 1876, but little else is known about him apart from the fact that he was active in the Paris art salons and rooms.

The bottom right hand corner of this drawing bears an inscription, which reads, in German “Gezeichnet von Eduard Braun 1826” (Drawn by Eduard Braun 1826) and then, under the name of the artist, it gives his dates of birth and death (1798-1876). This is interesting and presents us with two possibilities. The first is that the inscription, minus the dates of birth and death (for obvious reasons), were written by the artist, with the dates of the artist’s birth and death being added later by another hand. The second is that someone else added the whole inscription, but with personal knowledge of the drawing’s provenance. Either way, there is no reason to doubt the dating of the work to 1826. The artist would have been 28 years old at this time, and this ties in very well with these works being part of an academic period of study for him.

The subject of this life study drawing is a young male, possibly in his mid-twenties to mid-thirties. He is toned and of muscular physique. We see the model in a rear view as he stands, legs apart, and holding a thin cane between his hands. His head is forward, so he is looking downwards, and he had a full head of thick curly hair. This is a beautifully executed piece of art.

On the reverse, and visible because of the way it has been framed, is another complete drawing. This is another study of a nude male, this time with both of his arms raised. The fact that this is a double-sided piece is an intriguing feature and, as far as any collector is concerned, this is indeed good value.

This excellent antique decorative piece is mounted and framed in a specialised way which sets it off to wonderful and practical effect.
