About this item
A nicely painted oil on board of a tavern scene from the 19thc....it shows four gentleman making merry and has some interesting items in the picture...note the churchwardens pipe, the pitcher of ale, the early violin and empty wine bottles....it really captures what it was like in the early taverns of the 19thc...the artist was probably a follower of Jan Steen, a dutch artist who was well known for painting similar pictures...
Dutch. C1870-90.
