Mid-Century Modern "High Street" Vintage Swedish Naïve Style Street Scene Oil Painting

A very charming mid-century street scene composition, executed in oil onto canvas.

The painting is inherently a delight to look at – with a myriad of details from this everyday scene to admire in a very lively colour palette. It presents a street scene lined with narrow and tall buildings, each having a different exterior front and brimming with character. In the foreground, people from all walks of life are going about their day. We can see a security guard guarding a building, a milkmaid pushing a cart with a milk jar, a young boy on his scooter, and a lady buying some goods from a stall.

The artist has used very fine brushstrokes to create a smooth, even finish, imbuing the painting with a sense of playfulness and frankness. There is a sincerity to the painting’s simplicity, both in vision and in execution. Its ‘Naïve’ character captures what many modernists seek –  to move away from what they see as the insincere sophistication of art created within the traditional system.

This oil on canvas is housed in a wide-profiled gilt frame. Both the painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.
