    30.3 cm diameter x 7 cm high

Hayley Smith began her career as a painter before becoming a virtuoso wood turner. She begins by turning a piece of wood on a lathe, then altering the surface, often by scorching it with heat or through the addition of carved facets, applied elements and contrasting finishes. This early piece has a beautiful simplicity. The inverted cone rests, perfectly balanced on a foot which is only 2.5 cm in diameter. It has been ebonised to the underside and then stripped back to the plain wood on the lathe. The fine concentric grooves, so masterfully managed, give the outer surface an appearance resembling that of a vinyl LP. The piece was aquired in Wales by the previous owner, before the artist emigrated to the United States.

Work by Hayley Smith can now be found in Victoria & Albert Museum, London; Yale University Art Gallery; Minneapolis Institute of Art; Museum of Art & Design, New York; The Detroit Institute of Arts; Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
