    Genuine Victorian Transfer Printed Pot

    EMOLLIO OINTMENT TABLETS

    London England
    c. 1880

This is a fabulous black transferware ointment pot or crock, circa 1880.  It once contained a Moisturizing Ointment of unknown quack ingredients.  Moisturizers or emollients are complex mixtures of chemical agents specially designed to make the external layers of the skin softer and more pliable. They increase the skin's hydration by reducing evaporation.

The crock was made in the Staffordshire district and is transfer printed in black. Probably contained a salve made of bear's grease fat mixed with magical herbs.

The crock pot top stands 1 " tall and 2 3/4” wide. It is well potted and has a crisp finely applied transfer. It is in great condition.

This diminutive medical piece is wildly amusing, a throwback to a much simpler and goofier time in the world of medicine. The piece will make a great addition to any collection of transfer printed advertising wares or quack medicines .
