    About this item

Victorian Gothic Pugin Oak Hall Chair
This little chair combines form and surface, colour and design so very well.  Typical of the Gothic revival style reinvigorated by Pugin, similar chairs are often found with domed tops which do not have the elegance of this pediment design, which is pierced and carved above four shaped columns, the colour of the back of this chair is exceptional, silky smooth and rubbed by many hands to achieve this colour, the plank seat with bevelled edges, turned tapering front legs which for Victorian design are simple and not too heavy, the back legs are splayed.  Slightly lower than a standard chair, but designed as an occasional chair to go in a hall.
    England, circa 1880

    The seat 42cm H.
