About this item
An 18th century longcase clock with eight day movement striking on a gong, the 12-inch square brass dial with matt centre, silvered subsidiary seconds and date aperture, the silvered chapter ring inscribed 'Stephen Levitt Chelmsford No 90', cornered with pierced and cast gilt putti and crown spandrels, the later case with moulded pediment, glazed door and turned columns to hood above a rectangular trunk door, plain base and bracket feet, height 205cm, with pendulum and a pair of brass case weights (faults and alterations). Note: Stephen Levitt (1689-1782) was a Quaker clockmaker and is recorded working from Middle Row, Chelmsford in 1734.
