About this item
A beautiful watercolour painting by the prolific British artist and illustrator Patience Arnold (1901-1992). Arnold was best known for paintings with themes of childhood. She frequently produced pieces featuring fairy tales and nursery rhymes, and illustrated many children's books with these themes. This large watercolour is typical of her work. It features a montage of scenes from eight traditional British nursery rhymes - 'Here We Come Gathering Nuts in May', 'Ring-a Ring-a Roses', 'Oranges and Lemons', 'Curly Locks', 'Lavender's Blue', 'Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush', 'Mary, Mary Quite Contrary' and 'I Had a Little Nut Tree'. It is beautifully painted; the children have charming faces and there is lots of intricate detail. Arnold's signature is in the bottom right hand corner. The painting dates to approximately the 1960s.
The painting has been beautifully mounted and framed in a bleached wood frame. This charming piece would make a perfect addition to a child's bedroom.
