Chris Baylis, principal of The Real Wood Furniture Company is passionate about wood, about the furniture made by the company, about antiques, (especially Windsor chairs) about music and his new album ‘Trem’, due for release in 2026.

Chris started out buying and selling antique English country chairs in 1979, founded The Real Wood Furniture Company in 1989 to make new furniture and opened retail showrooms in Woodstock in 1996. Immersion in the world of antiques taught him about proportion, style, colour and more…skills which he used to the full in designing the pieces made by the company.

20 years of trading in Woodstock came to an end in 2017, when the company moved to larger premises in an old Coaching Inn outside Chipping Norton

Fast forward to 2019, when the untimely death of Tony Smith, friend and colleague of some 30 years, who ran the workshop end, (to the beat of his ‘rhythmic’ drum), led to a complete re-evaluation of the business. Add the pandemic to the equation and it came clear that things had to change……

The ‘day to day’ business of The Real Wood Furniture Company, making new furniture, was wound down to a close in June 2021, whilst Chris continued to deal in antiques with ‘trade’ customers only.

Fast forward again to 2025….and you find us still making a limited range of new pieces, and now offering ex showroom ‘new’ pieces and our extensive antiques stock to all comers. We are ‘open’ again!

You are welcome to make an appointment to view both new and antique stock at our beautiful Chipping Norton showrooms. The website exhibits only a small proportion of our total stock….which now leans more to the ‘antique’ side of the business and includes over a thousand antique country chairs, tables, chests, cabinets, lighting, architectural items, garden pieces and more…..
