About this item
An Art Deco, Egyptian style. four door, burr walnut wardrobe by Semus, Switzerland, c. 1920-30.
Following the excavation of Egyptian sites, the motifs and designs of unearthed antiquities began to influence furniture, architecture and interior styles of the early 20th century.
The exterior of the wardrobe, in a beautiful walnut veneer, features a gentle inward sweep framed by two, Egyptian Papyrus columns with open bell capitals. A central column has been carved with a lotus bud design at the top and base.
The exquisite satinwood veneer interior features a central hanging space, which is flanked on either side by two enclosed drawers, two open drawers and two shelves. There is a circular, dress mirror on the interior of the left door.
The keen attention to detail on the wardrobe can be seen throughout. The keys, for example, have been cast in the form of tiny yet intricate laurel wreaths; finished in gold.
This wardrobe would be a standout piece in a dressing room or could be used in a hallway as a luxurious linen-press. Unlike an expensive fitted wardrobe, this truly unique piece can be transported to a new home, and passed down as an heirloom piece to future generations.
