    About this item

'The Shoeing Forge' by John Joseph Barker Of Bath (1824-1904), signed to the lower right, and signed and titled verso. Oil on board.

Painter and draftsman, John Joseph Barker was the son of painter Thomas Barker of Bath (1767-1847) and brother of artists Benjamin and Thomas Jones Barker. John was instructed in drawing and painting by his father. At 18 he fell out with his brother Benjamin over Mary Anne Rand, whom he married in 1845. He became a prolific painter of sentimental and landscape works, remaining in Bath but exhibiting at the Royal Academy and British Institution, both in London.

John Jospeh Barker was primarily a painter of landscapes and although he has been known to paint interior scenes, they are usually sentimental thus this work is a departure from his usual subject. Barker has painted fireplaces as part of interior scenes as well as autumnal landscapes, thus it is as if he has drawn on his knowledge and skill in using the orange colour palette to create this intricate work which exhibits the painting of fire and ambient light so beautifully.

The work has a gloss varnish and is housed in a neat giltwood frame. Both work and frame remain in a very good condition throughout.
