A Burmese Lacquer Basket-Shaped Box (“Ok-Kwet” or “Hyatim-Gyaing”)
Mandalay or Pagan (Burma/Myanmar)
Black and red lacquer over a woven bamboo form
Circa 20th Century
Measures: 28 cm high x 27 wide x 21 cm deep

A black lacquered basket-shaped, three-part box, of bombé form with fluted sides beneath a fixed handle. The interior in cinnabar red lacquer. The lid decorated with two birds, above an integral stacking oval-shaped tiered bowl.

Used for the transportation and storage of provisions, or for the presentation of food offerings at a temple. In Burmese this object could be variously described as an "Ok-Kwet" (food container), "Hsun-Gwet" (offering vessel) or "Hyatim-Gyaing" (tiffin basket).

Good condition. Very slight wear to the foot commensurate with age.
