Antique Marquetry & Mahogany Dumb Waiter, Buffet or Serving Table: circa 1780

This beautiful marquetry dumb waiter was made in the late 18th Century.

Used in may fine English Victorian and Edwardian sitting rooms and dining rooms dumb waiters were used as side tables or serving tables.

They were used for afternoon teas, dishes of food being served for dinner and after dinner alcoholic drinks, placed at the end of the table.

This allowed the staff to retired for the evening and the guests could chat in private, hence the name dumb waiter.

Dumb waiters were used from about. the mid 1700s to the 1930s and today they are used for a variety of display and storage purposes from

display tables in Tea Rooms to additional surface space for books and other paraphilia.

The surfaces of this beautiful dumb waiter are decorated with finely executed and exquisite Dutch marquetry indicating it was made for a wealthy family and would have been a focal point when the family entertained at home.

The trays, feet base and columns all have this stunning marquetry which is in excellent condition, showing no sign of damage or repairs.

The top has a centre of parrot tulips surrounded by a band of flowers.

The second tier has urns with tulips and foliage.

The bottom tier has birds on a branch.

Both the lower tiers swivel around the centre column.

This beautifully decorated fine quality dumb waiter would make an eye-catching centrepiece to a sitting room or dining room.
