With an introductory memoir by William B Scott. Published by George Routledge and Sons, Broadway, Ludgate Hill, London and 9 Lafayette Place, New York, 1883. Nine engraved illustrations, one a portrait of Scott with his dog, after a painting by J W Gordon, as frontispiece and another, a vignette of his home, Abbotsford, on the title page. Sir Walter Scott (1771 - 1832) First Baronet and Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, was founder of the genre of historical novel. Although primarily remembered for his extensive literary output, Scott was an advocate, judge and legal administrator by profession, becoming Clerk of Session and Sheriff-Depute of Selkirkshire whilst writing prolifically and editing.

Small 8vo 6” x 8”. 640pp. Half-bound in dark green calf with dark crimson marbled boards, page edges and endpapers. Five raised bands and gilt title and decoration to spine. Tissue guard to frontispiece.

Condition: Very good+ copy with tight spine and clean, bright pages. Light foxing to free endpapers, first title page and occasionally throughout. Boards strong, bright and clean with only shelf wear and a little rubbing to upper edges and corners. Mild sunning to spine but a handsome, square copy.
