This works combines subjects close to his heart, throughout his career he painted subjects of children and Lasswade was where he lived. The 1870's marked a transition in his painting style his Pre-Raphaelite close-up pictures of children developed into scenes of countryside where the paint surface breaks out into a wild tangle of streaks, splashes and dabs as clearly shown here. Tone was increasingly replaced by a rich awareness of colour, surface and texture.
Lasswade a village in Midlothian, to the east of Edinburgh, McTaggart moved here from Edinburgh at about the time he painted this work and lived there till his death in 1910. The receipt we have for the purchase of the work by Brownlie was just 7 years later.
