A Goldfinch Eating White Strawberries
19th Century English Naïve School Watercolour
In its original rosewood frame
Circa 1830's

Measures:-
18.1 cm high x 13.7 cm wide (image)
28.7 cm high x 24.2 cm wide (framed)

A delightful, naïve image of a goldfinch (carduelis carduelis) eating white strawberries from a marble plinth. Beautifully presented in its original rosewood frame with a gilt inner slip and a "watch-top" hanger.

As well as being the subject of a famous 1645 painting by Carel Fabritius,  the goldfinch is a bird associated with various folklore tales. Alongside the robin and its red breast, the goldfinch is said to have gained its red face by trying to pluck the spikes from the Crown of Thorns to relieve the agonies of Christ. It was also believed to be able to remove the sickness from any patient who stared it in the eye. Both of these legends make it a particularly appropriate subject for this charming 19th Century amateur painting.
