Staffordshire Green Transferware Plate
CHINESE PASTIME
Davenport ~ Staffordshire, England ~ c. 1840
This stunning transferware plate, c. 1840, measures 7 3/4” in diameter. Finely potted, it is decorated in green with light pearlware glaze.
The plate has a beautifully scalloped rim.
It is decorated in the gorgeous "CHINESE PASTIME" series pattern, showing two children playing in a Chinoiserie - type lavish flower garden, on of the children holding a large fish, surrounded by exotic flowers. A busy border trim alternates flowers with scrolls, producing decoration very rich with little white space remaining.
The plate bears a backstamp that is almost as wonderful as the decoration itself, containing a cartouch with the pattern name and two impish children. It was made by Davenport, a pottery maker in the Staffordshire district 1820-1860.
The plate in great condition, with no chips, cracks, or repairs.
