After William Holman Hunt, O.M. (1827–1910)
"The Light of the World"
Photogravure
Circa 1880
Measures 46.5 cm x 32.5 (Framed)
A beautifully presented photogravure print of Holman Hunt's celebrated Pre-Raphaelite religious painting "The Light of the World". Retaining its original Victorian dark oak frame, gilt slip and arch shaped ash wood mount.
Full of allegorical details and allusions, "The Light of the World" was one of the most important and popular paintings of the late Victorian era, inspired by a text from the Book of Revelation, Chapter 3:
"Behold I stand at the door and knock. If any man hear my voice and open the door I will come in to him and will sup with him and he with me."
The photogravure here is of the original version of the work, painted in 1853 and now in the chapel of Keble College, Oxford.
