Early Child's Transferware Alphabet ABC Mug
S for SNAIL, T for TIGER
Staffordshire England c. 1840
This fantastic child's alphabet mug or ABC cup dates to around 1840. Potted of soft paste, it stands 3" tall with an applied handle and pearlware glaze . Brown transfer printing.
Decorated with images from an early alphabet series featuring two letters, each illustrated with wonderfully naive images:
As would be expected of a piece this age, the cup is unmarked. It was more than likely made in the Staffordshire region or another of the pottery districts in England. Mugs like this were made as gifts for good children, rewards of merit, and used to aid in the education of youngsters in the early to mid-19th century.
The mug is in great condition. One of the best we've seen in this early series.
