A rare and stunning Edwardian mahogany dressing table by 'Lamb of Manchester'.  Inlaid throughout with exquisite marquetry detail depicting Neoclassical motif of ribboned swags of foliate and trailing bell husks and with finely carved finial motifs.  The top surmounted with adjustable bevelled mirror plate of rectangular form set within mahogany frame flanked with shaped supports, over an arrangement of two concave drawers with brass pulls.  The moulded table top raised over a shaped inlaid frieze of two short drawers with brass pulls supported on line inlaid turned tapering leg with reeded detail joined with concave undertier terminating on ceramic casters.  Stamped by 'Lamb of Manchester'.

Lambs of Manchester

Lambs of Manchester were a prolific cabinet making firm, founded by James Lamb, a Manchester cabinetmaker in the mid 19th Century.  Born in 1816, James Lamb joined the family business and transformed it into a high class interior design, decorating and furnishing firm.  The firm had a cabinet making workshop in Castleford and their main gallery in John Dalton Street, Manchester consisted of vast furniture showrooms spread over three floors displaying the incredible high end and bespoke items of furniture for purchase.

Lambs of Manchester was to go onto international success, winning medals at the London 1862 Exhibition and the Paris 1867 Exhibition.  James Lamb passed in 1903, leaving an incredible legacy of being at the forefront of British during this period.  The obituary paying tribute to him, that appeared in 'The Journal of Decorative Art and British Decorators' stated that: 'His name was a synonym for the best in everything that he did, and he towered over everybody in Lancashire and Yorkshire as maker of high class furniture. James Lamb's name for 50 years stood as a landmark for all that was best in both spheres of industrial art.'

Lambs of Manchester employed famous designers of calibre, such as Charles Bevan, Bruce Talbert and W.J Estall and were especially famous for their Arts & Crafts furniture.
