John Smith Atherton (1877-1943) was a painter in  oil and watercolour, born in Todmorden. A regular exhibitor, he showed at the RA, RSA, RI, RWA, GI and in the provinces specifically at the Yorkshire Union of Artists.

"A Wharfedale Holding" is a good example. Measuring 9"x 12" the painting in signed lower left and is framed giving an overall size of 15"x 18".
