About this item
This is an antique portrait. An English, framed ceramic painting, dating to the late Victorian period, circa 1890 and later.
Deputy Surgeon General John Robert Theobalds (dates unknown - granted retirement by Queen Victoria in April 1880) was stationed in Madras, as part of Her Majesty's Indian Military Forces. Villier's & Quicks photographic services of Bristol held their premises at 42 Park Street at the end of the 1880s. Their speciality was recreating photographs in oil or watercolour.
Wonderful ceramic portrait and several period photographs
Displays a desirable aged patina, presented within a later, professional frame. Portrait skilfully applied to ceramic, observed from an original photograph — photo present
Painted in watercolours, with subtle colour and delicate detail. Period photographs show Theobalds in further poses, and one family portrait with children
