First state with the subject's name still as Miss Farren.

Lettered beneath with the title "Miss Farren"; the artist's details "T.Lawrence Pinxt." / "F.Bartolozzi Sculpt. R.A. Engraver to his Majesty" and with the publication line "Published Jany.2 1792 by Bull & Jeffryes Ludgate Hill London". Trimmed to just on the platemark. Neat pencil inscription "afterwards Countess of Derby".

Elizabeth Farren (c.1759–1829) was a highly accomplished actress. She retired from the stage in 1797 to become Countess of Derby, following her marriage to Edward Smith-Stanley, 12th Earl of Derby (she was his second wife). Horace Walpole spoke of her as the most perfect actress he had ever seen and, on the day of Farren's marriage, Mrs. Siddons (the great tragic actress) commiserated the loss of "our comic muse". The original full-length portrait, on which this engraving is based, was painted at the hight of Elizabeth Farren's fame on stage and is one of Thomas Lawrence's early masterpieces. It can now be found in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York (Met Acc No - 50.135.5). Her daughter Lady Mary Stanley became Countess of Wilton.
