Indian miniature - Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh Bahadur

Indian miniature painting, gouache on paper, of  Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh Bahadur, highly detailed and highlighted in gold, with gilt, ornate borders.

Madho Singh I of  Jaipur (1728 - 1768) was an active, effective ruler admired as a patron of science and learning. He is depicted wearing a white jama sitting cross-legged upon a deep red carpet and leaning against a large round cushion. He holds a jewelled bracelet in his left hand and his haloed head is covered by a bejewelled cap.

Entitled beneath the portrait in English. To the reverse, bears the label of the print and picture dealers, The Parker Gallery, Albemarle Street, London, trading since 1750.
