Indian miniature of Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh Bahadur, entitled beneath the portrait in English. Gouache on paper, highly detailed and highlighted in gold, with gilt, ornate borders. To the reverse, bears the label of the print and picture dealers, The Parker Gallery, Albemarle Street, London, trading since 1750.
Madho Singh l of Jaipur (1728 - 1768) was an active, effective ruler admired as a patron of science and learning. He is depicted wearing a white jama sitting cross-legged upon a deep red carpet and leaning against a large round cushion. He holds a jewelled bracelet in his left hand and his haloed head is covered by a bejewelled cap.
