    About this item

A very well executed oil on canvas of Mother & Child In An Orchard by Italian artist Giuseppe Solenghi (1879-1944) signed lower left. Probably painted after the first world war. A beautiful painting where the artist has caught the gentle dappled sunlight falling through the trees on to the mother while her son shelters in the shade. With a lake in the background, possibly Lake Como in northern Italy. Sitting in a handsome gilt and glazed frame, with a deep scarlet velvet mount which sits nicely with the colours in the painting. From 1892 to 1895 Solenghi was a pupil at the Brera Academy, studying painting under Cesare Tallone, sculpture and engraving under Ernesto Bazzaro, and perspective under Giuseppe Mentessi. For a five year period, 1895-1900, he dedicated himself to working on illuminated manuscripts. He began exhibiting his landscapes primarily after the First World War and it is said that Leonardo Bazzaro influenced his choice of landscapes and views. Rather than the sunlit pastoral views, he preferred to depict the humid panoramas of the canals of Milan and Venetian lagoons. He had a posthumous exhibition in the Galleria Boito of Milan, sponsored by the Fondazione Cariplo.
