About this item
This is an ancient Roman AE (Orichalcum) Sestertius, of Emperor Trajan, minted at Rome in 107 AD
Obverse: IMP CAES NERVAE TRAIANO AVG GER DAC P M TR P COS V P P "Supreme commander (Imperator), Caesar, of Nerva Trajan, emperor (Augustus), conqueror of the Germans, conqueror of the Dacians, high priest, holder of tribunician power, consul for the fifth time, father of the nation" Laureate bust of Trajan to right, with aegis on shoulder.
Reverse: S P Q R OPTIMO PRINCIPI / S C "The senate and the Roman people to the best of princes. Decree of the senate" Victory standing right, inscribing VIC DAC on shield supported by palm tree.
The reverse of this coin refers to Trajan’s conquest of Dacia and its resettlement by colonists brought from all over the empire. The triumph celebrated in Rome lasted 123 days and included gladiatorial exhibitions that seemingly took the lives of over 11,000 people, primarily slaves and criminals (many probably Dacian prisoners).
