About this item
This is an ancient Roman Æ orichalcum Sestertius, of Emperor Gordian III, minted in Rome between 241 - 243 AD
Obverse: IMP GORDIANVS PIVS FEL AVG, "Emperor Gordianus, Pious and Happy August" laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right.
Reverse: IOVI STATORI, "To Jupiter, the upholder (preserver)" Jupiter standing front, head right, holding long scepter and thunderbolt; S-C across fields. The reverse inscription relates to Jove (Jupiter) who upholds (preserves).
A wonderful coin with a great patina and pleasant portrait.
