    About this item

This is an ancient Roman gold Solidus of emperor Valentinian I, dating to 364 - 375 AD

Obverse: DN VALENTINI-ANVS PF AVG,"Our Lord Valentinian Pious Fortunate August" rosette-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right

Reverse: RESITITVTOR REIPVBLICAE, "Restorer of the Republic" Emperor standing facing, head right, holding Victory on globe and labarum (standard with chi-rho on banner)

This coin was struck at the Antioch mint, between 364 - 375 AD mint mark ANTA [A (alpha) 1st] for the primus or 1st Officina at Antioch]

A superb example in EF condition on a large medallic flan, the quality and style of portraiture indicative of the best engraver and with neat lettering of the 'primus' or 1st mint master. The coin is in mint condition, with an edge knock from excavation but otherwise pristine with original lustre.
