About this item
Book of 21 watercolours by John Marshall-West, inscribed inside front board ‘John Marshall-West Captn Dec ‘95’, although later ones suggest a later date of 1899. Using more intense colours than in his previous books, West paints in a highly accomplished manner, more domestic landscapes, three of Broadstairs and the coast-guard, one of Kingsgate Castle, with an unfinished little girl in the centre of the picture, possibly his only daughter, Evelyn, aged 6/7 at the time of the painting and a rowing scene on the River Thames. He also paints the same field at Orchard Portman, this time empty of the tents he had painted some 4 years previously. Other paintings depict mountain and coastal scenes and there is a one of the S S Pekin sailing past the Portuguese Cape St. Vincent.
