Edwin Harris was one of the first pioneers of the Newlyn School of artists and friends and contemporary of many of the greatest artists of the day, including Walter Langley and Stanhope Forbes. He was educated at Old Edgbaston School, Birmingham, the Birmingham School of Art and Verlat’s Academy, Antwerp. His works are generally figurative or of cottage interiors. His work was exhibited in some of the leading London galleries, including the Royal Academy from around 1882 onwards and sold well. From 1883 Harris was a prominent part of the art scene in Newlyn and it is said that when he and Walter Langley settled there it graduated from a colony to a School. The Harris family lived at Castle Cliff Cottage, Newlyn, which became well known for his civilised hospitality.
