Frederick John Widgery (1861-1942) was educated at Exeter Cathedral School, Exeter School of Art and then at South Kensington School of Art (now the Royal College of Art) before travelling to Antwerp. He further studied with Hubert von Herkomer at Bushey. He specialised in paintings of the dramatic Devon moorland and coastal landscapes. He became Mayor of Exeter in 1903.
