Malcolm Edwards is undoubtedly one of the finest watercolour artists of his generation. He is acknowledged as one of Wales’ most accomplished contemporary artists and has contributed greatly to the promotion of Welsh art.

Malcolm Edwards was born in 1934 to Welsh parents, and studied Architecture at Liverpool University from 1952-1958. He worked in private architectural practice in Wales from 1960-1993, from which time he has been a full-time painter. He has won many awards and in 1994 was elected to the Royal Cambrian Academy of Art, of which he is now a former Honorary Secretary.

The work of Malcolm Edwards is almost exclusively the landscapes of north Wales, specifically Snowdonia, and has a characteristic, atmospheric style. He says “Wild and mountainous places are the main source of my inspiration. I am fascinated by the texture of buildings and the landscape riven by the corrosive forces of wind and rain and with the fickle changes of light created on the faceted surfaces.” He is proud to promote the beauty of the Welsh landscape, stating “The mood and drama is paramount, and I want the viewer to be completely struck by the thought that it could only be Wales, even if the image or a large proportion of it is non-representational.”

Edwards lives in north Wales, where he paints from his studio in Holywell, Flintshire. He works mainly from sketchbooks full of information and images collected over the last thirty-odd years, together with his memory and imagination. His preferred medium is always watercolour, sometimes used in a traditional manner, but often in more adventurous and unconventional styles, created by exploiting uneven drying, frequent washing out and creating the subject from the grainy texture.

Today his paintings are in collections in the USA, Canada, Mexico, Australia, Sweden, Bermuda, South Africa, France and Germany. His works have also been purchased by Rolls Royce, The Contemporary Arts Society for Wales, Aberystwyth and The Clwyd Fine Arts Trust.

His work is in permanent collections in the National Museum of Wales, the Contemporary Art Society for Wales and the National Library of Wales.

This stunning original watercolour by Malcolm Edwards depicts a typical Welsh farmstead, with a flock of sheep on a hillside, and the ubiquitous sheepdog keeping watch. This is classic Malcolm Edwards; the clean skyline, the expansive landscape, the strong Welsh cultural theme and the exquisite attention to detail. The palette is perfectly balanced, with bright, almost rainbow colours in the sky, contrasted against the dark sharp stonework of the buildings and the pale verdant green tones of the grass, with the whiteness of the sheep bringing the all-important accent. This is a strong composition, beautifully crafted. The painting is signed by the artist in the lower right section.
