About this item
A Wedgwood, black basalt library bust of Bunyan. John Bunyan, best known for writing The Pilgrim’s Progress, was an English author and nonconformist who was imprisoned twice for unlicensed preaching. He lived from 1628 to 1688. This bust is marked “WEDGWOOD” and “BUNYAN” to the back of the shoulder and the underside of the socle is also stamped “WEDGWOOD”. It dates from the 1860’s when Wedgwood produced a series of large basalt library busts. It is one of the less common busts in the series and one that we have not had before. It is well modelled and it is in excellent condition.
