About this item
A fine quality Wedgwood black basalt portrait medallion of William Pitt. This is marked, to the reverse, ‘WEDGWOOD’ and it dates from c.1790. The portrait is of William Pitt the younger who lived from 1759 to 1806. Pitt was educated at Cambridge and became Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1782 at the age of 23. The portrait has been variously attributed to John Flaxman, Lochee and Tassie and was modelled about 1787.
It is exceptionally well moulded with superb detail and it is in excellent condition.
