About this item
A pair of Wedgwood black basalt figures of Cupid and Psyche. Both figures have impressed marks to the reverse. Both are marked “WEDGWOOD” and, in larger letters, one is impressed “CUPID” and the other “PSYCHE”. They date from c.1860.
In mythology, Cupid, the god of love, was the son of Venus. Venus was jealous of the beautiful, mortal Psyche so she told Cupid to induce Psyche to fall in love with a monster. Instead, he became enamoured with her and married her on condition that she should never see his face. Hence, with these figures, he looks down to the ground.
The figures are both very well modelled and nicely detailed. They are both in excellent condition.
Dimensions: Psyche: Height 21cm. Diameter 10.7cm. Cupid: Height 20cm. Diameter 10.7cm.
Price includes delivery within the U.K. Shipping to the U.S.A. add £50. Most of Western Europe add £25.
