    About this item

A late Victorian, bronze and brass, milliners’  iron. This type of iron was used for making lace or felt shapes for decorating hats. This example is in the shape of a petal, the one section made from brass and the the other from bronze and having a wooden handle. It dates from c.1890. The fabric was washed and starched and then laid into the brass section. The bronze follower would then press the fabric into the mould and it would then be trimmed around the edge.  The combination of brass and bronze is quite unusual and the piece is in excellent condition.
