    About this item

A large, Wedgwood caneware game pie dish. This is marked “WEDGWOOD” and it is also impressed with the letters “AAW”. This is the three letter date code for the year of manufacture 1868. There is also a number “12” which relates to the length of the dish in inches.

Caneware, this buff coloured earthenware, was developed during a period when there was a shortage of flour and it was used to simulate pastry. You would cook your game casserole and then bring it to the table in the caneware dish so that it looked like a pie. This type of pottery became popular and continued to be used long after the flour shortages ended.

This example is well moulded with garlands of grapes and vines to the sides from which hang groups of dead game. To the lid are further groups of game and a rabbit finial.

Originally it would have had a liner but this is now missing. Both the dish and cover are in very good condition.

    Dimensions: Length 31.3cm. Width 23cm. Height 17.5cm.

Price includes postage within the U.K. Shipping to the U.S.A. add £40. Most of Western Europe add £20.
